Slumdog Millionare wins 8 oscars
History was created when a movie based on rise of a mumbai slum boy (dog) won 8 oscars today.
There are 2 sets of people.
The first set do not approve the movie to be in oscars
The second set overwhelmingly approve the movie.
I have not heard of an intermediate set who were okey dokey with the movie.
I belong to the first category who do not approve the movie to be in the oscars. My arguements are simple
1. The script is very weak.
Let me elaborate. We have had 2 Kaun Banega Karodpati (who wants to be a millionare ) hosts vis Amithabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan. If you note the mannerisms they are curtious. In fact they make their guests so comfortable that they feel at home. So I cannot imagine a host of one such show to be so sarcastic.
If you are making a realistic sounding movie the host also should be realistic.
2. Cinematography is week
I could not appreciate the cinematography. There was a lack of continuity at many places.
3. Jai ho !!! what the hell was that !!!
Now tell me one thing, this movie goes to the oscars and the movie ends with this dumb songs. If I had not known that this score was created by Rahman, I would have easily assumed that this was an amateur piece by some struggling music director. THis cannot be Rahman's score !!!
4. What was so unique compared to Lagaan and Taare Zameen Par !!
Aamir struggles to get the whole setup right in both the movies. Creates an Amazing movie with touching scripts amazing music great editing and gets rejected !!!!
5. It is 3 oscars short of all time highest Oscar Grossers Titanic, Ben Hur and Lord of the Rings Can you imagine that !!! Can you get more ridiculous !!!
Now lets get to the mundane reasons cited by the first camp...
6. It is directed by a british director so why is the indian junta jumping around
7. The reason it got so many nominations is because it is directed by a british director. Lagan and TZP had to contend for best foreign film for the simple reason that the director was an Indian. If Lagaan or TZP was directed by an american/british director even these would have got 7-8 nominations. So whats all this chest thumping for?
8. It shows India in poor light. The movie celebrates poverty, which does not go well. We know people live in slums but celebrating that is not correct.
But yes it shows the struggle of a slum boy and his victory against odds. So in that sense yes its a good movie. But celebrating with so many oscars... It sounded like the world was pointing to India and saying... "look along with all the bru ha ha of technological advances that you brag, you have a section of society which is far away from reality"
I rest my case here.
